Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Story?

Instagram doesn't notify when you screenshot a story. See when it does, how DMs, Close Friends and Story Preview differ, and what puts you on the viewer list.

No. Instagram doesn't notify people when you screenshot their story. What can give you away is opening the story while you're logged in, because that puts your name on their viewer list.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?

Taking a screenshot of a story doesn't send a notification, whoever posted it. The owner gets no alert and sees no sign that you saved it.

The opposite claim goes around every year. It started with something real: Instagram tested screenshot alerts for stories in 2018 and dropped them the same year. It also sticks around because Instagram does flag screenshots in some direct messages, and people assume stories work the same way. They don't.

What about posts and reels?

Same rule. Screenshotting a post or a reel doesn't notify anyone.

Instagram doesn't tell people who scrolled their posts or watched their reels, either. Business and creator accounts see numbers, but not who's behind them.

When Instagram does notify: DMs in vanish mode

Direct messages are the one place a screenshot can be noticed, and only in two cases:

  • Vanish mode: if a chat has vanish mode on and you take a screenshot, the other person is notified.
  • Disappearing photos and videos: if someone sends you one and you screenshot it, they can find out.

A screenshot of a regular chat doesn't notify anyone. If you're not sure which kind of chat you're in, assume a screenshot could be noticed.

Close Friends stories

A Close Friends story follows the same screenshot rule as any other story: the owner isn't notified.

Viewing it is a different matter. You can only see a Close Friends story if you're on the owner's list and logged in, so watching it always puts your name on the viewer list. The owner won't know you saved it, but they will see that you watched it.

Viewers that don't use your Instagram account can't open Close Friends stories at all.

Story Preview and the viewer list

Story Preview is part of Instagram Plus, a paid subscription. It lets subscribers watch a story without being added to the viewer list, so the list may not show everyone who looked.

Without Instagram Plus, a viewer that doesn't use your account, such as our anonymous Instagram viewer, also keeps your name off the list, though only for public accounts.

Does screenshotting a story count as a view?

No. What counts is opening the story, and you've already done that by the time you take a screenshot. If you were logged in, your name is on the viewer list, and the owner can see it until 48 hours after the story was posted. Skipping the screenshot wouldn't change that.

Two common tricks don't help much:

  • Airplane mode. Load the stories, switch on airplane mode, then watch. The app often hasn't loaded the whole story, and the view can still be recorded once you're back online.
  • A second account. Your main account stays off the list, but the second one shows up instead. If it's new, or follows the same people you do, the owner may guess it's you.

Replies, emoji reactions, likes and poll votes also show the owner your name. Our guide on who can see that you viewed a story explains how the list works.

If you're screenshotting a story just to keep it, check whether the owner saved it to a highlight. Highlights stay on the profile after the 24 hours are up, and you can open public ones with an Instagram highlight viewer without logging in.

What actually leaves a trace

  • Watching a story while logged in: your name is on the viewer list for 48 hours after the story was posted.
  • Watching without logging in, for example with an Instagram story viewer that doesn't use your account: your name isn't on the list. This only works for public accounts. Photos and videos still load from Instagram's servers, so Instagram can see your IP address, but the person who posted the story can't.
  • Screenshotting a story, post or reel: no notification.
  • Screenshotting a vanish mode chat, or a disappearing photo or video in DMs: the other person can find out.
